[20th August 2020, California] Thousands of residents of a northern California city were evacuated Wednesday due to series of fires which raged overnight, destroying dozens of homes and structures.

“California has so far experienced 10,849 lightning strikes in the last 72 hours and a world record for heat temperatures,” Governor Gavin Newsom said on Twitter. “We are currently fighting 367 known fires.

The massive fires outside Vacaville , a city of about 100,000 residents near the state capital Sacramento, is part of a series of fires that have burned about 20,200 acres in recent days in three counties. “If you are asked to evacuate to safety, please do so safely,” Vacaville police said on Twitter. “Virtually all response units in the city are actively working to report, evacuate and fight fires safely, so that our residents are safe,” he added.

Many people suffered burns while running for their lives

Governor Gavin Newsom has declared a state of emergency Tuesday night, to facilitate the release of funds against the fires “that have been exacerbated by the historic west coast heat wave and strong and sustained winds.” Thankful to our firefighters, who were first to respond, and everyone on the front lines protecting Californians during this time.” Newson also appreciated the reinforcements sent from Nevada, Arizona and Texas to fight the fires in California, where another 30 fires have affected some 48,562 hectares, including the wine region.
