Jack Teixeira, a former member of the US Air National Guard, was recently convicted of disclosing classified military documents using Discord server and was given 15 years imprisonment.
Teixeira, a former employee at a Massachusetts military base, obtained documents as part of his employment to show off to young militarists enrolled in Discord group “Thug Shaker Central.” These secrets related to allies and adversaries alike abroad like Russia, China, Ukraine and South Korea; Teixeira intended for these documents from this job to impress these military-obsessed young friends of his who formed “Thug Shaker Central.”
In March, Teixeira pled guilty to six counts of willfully transmitting and retaining national defense information, in exchange for the government dropping more serious spy charges that could have led to up to 60-year sentences.
At a Nov. 12 press conference, FBI Special Agent Jodi Cohen told reporters that Teixeira did it to impress his anonymous buddies, boost his ego and correct the record about Russia’s invasion in Ukraine.
The judge who handed down the sentence, Indira Talwani accepted the plea agreement formally on Tuesday. She told Teixeira: “You posted hundreds of documents on Discord over the course of an entire year…I find no ambiguity in what you did being wrong.”
After a week-long investigation into how classified Pentagon documents were being posted online, federal law enforcement arrested Teixeira in his family home in Massachusetts.
The prosecution asked Talwani for a sentence of 200 months, or almost 17 years in prison. This was because of his role as the central figure in “one the most significant and consequential Espionage Act violations in American history,” a violation that led to reforms of the handling of classified data.
