14 November 2024, Edinberg Zoo – Zoo owners have linked the death of a red baby panda at Bonfire Night with fireworks, and called for stricter regulations. The Royal Zoological Society of Scotland, which owns Edinburgh Zoo and is a wildlife conservation charity, blamed the death of a three-month old panda kit Roxie’s death on fireworks.
Ben Supple (RZSS deputy CEO) said that Roxie had just lost her mother Ginger, but she was responding well with specialist care provided by our team of experts and was eating independently.
Our vets think that she was likely reacting to fireworks. The noises were too loud for Roxie, who had access to her den. We’re also worried that fireworks stress other animals at the zoo.
Mr Supple called for the Scottish and UK government to tighten the regulations on fireworks, and supported a ban on the sale of these products to the general public. He said that fireworks can cause fear and anxiety in pets, livestock, and animals at zoos. Therefore, it is important for the UK and Scottish government to tighten restrictions regarding their sale and usage.
