Alias Grace – One the best series on Netflix 2018
Based on a Margaret Atwood novel (and a true story), Alias Grace begins with a mystery. Grace Marks (Sarah Gadon) is serving a sentence for murder, for which her accomplice was hanged. Grace has numerous supporters, who hire Dr. Simon Jordan (Edward Holcroft) to reveal a truth that will absolve her.
Grace’s story takes her from Ireland to Canada, where she works as a servant for the rich man she is supposed to kill. And the truth is that the series is not a simple detective novel. As a member of the lower class, and as a woman, Grace navigates through the social hierarchies that capture her every moment of every day. In her examination of Grace’s history, her sad past and society’s changing visions of her, Alias Grace weaves a story about what it is like to be a woman in a world ruled by men.
House of Cards (Politics)
We started this top 5 of Netflix’s best series starting with the fifth place, which corresponds to House of Cards. This political drama is an adaptation of the homonymous miniseries broadcast by the British network BBC (which is also available on the platform), in which we present Francis “Frank” Underwood (played by Kevin Spacey), a relentless and manipulative congressman who, along with his wife Claire (Robin Wright) will handle with a brilliant skill all the goings-on that come with having the power of Washington.

The series follows Tommy and his family as they collide and confront other criminal families and the British government. Peaky Blinders is beautifully filmed, and the story it tells is based on complicated people and a muddy moral.
Mindhunter
In 1977, cultural earthquakes have overthrown faith in the American ideal, and FBI agents confront an unknown type of criminal: the serial killer, whose crimes have no reasonable grounds.
Agent Holden Ford (Jonathan Groff) believes that, with enough investigation, the FBI can make sense of this seemingly pointless violence.
Along with the agent of the Behavioral Sciences Unit Bill Tench (Holt McCallany), Ford travels around the country, interviewing imprisoned serial killers to understand what has driven them to do what they have done. From director David Fincher, Mindhunter is a lugubrious and spooky production, with a focus on the nature of criminal psychology, rather than grotesque violence.

Better Call Saul
Genre: Drama, Crime, Black humor
Years: 2015-present
Score in IMDb : 8.7 / 10
Bob Odenkirk plays the main character in Better Call Saul. Fans of Vince Gilligan’s Breaking Bad series will be back in New Mexico again this time watching the adventures of the then-named Jimmy McGill, who later changed his name to Saul Goodman. The series takes place six years before the events shown in Breaking Bad and shows the beginnings of this lawyer who seems to permanently attract bad luck and an inability not to fall into dirty business.
What the critics say: No doubt in line with its predecessor, Better Call Saul has managed to earn a place among the best rated series of today, thanks to intelligent scripts and a leading performance worthy of several awards.
The West Wing
It is possibly the best political drama of all time. The West Wing has as main character and president of the United States Jed Bartlett (played by Martin Sheen) and his cabinet while discussing serious personal and political battles during his two terms as president. Suits
Genre : Drama, Law, Comedy
Years : 2011-present
Score in IMDb : 8.6 / 10
Story: In search of an assistant to his height, the renowned lawyer Harvey Specter will end up finding his best ally in Mike Ross, a young man with a brilliant mind that, nevertheless, never finished his university studies in law.
What the critics say: The brilliant evolution of the characters in this story is only surpassed by the endearing relationships that are formed between them. Despite having lost viewers over the years, the Harvey-Ross tandem is still a safe bet.
Easy
This eight-episode anthology explores the incarnations of romance, and almost every episode presents a different story in the city of Chicago. One of the episodes shows a couple trying to rekindle the spark in their relationship, another of a pair of artists whose lives they share all the time, both in their free time and in their work. Not all episodes are wonderful but explore the areas of romance honestly and intimately.
The Fall
Detective Superintendent Stella Gibson (Gillian Anderson) is investigating a series of murders in Northern Ireland / The killer, Paul Spector (Jamie Dornan) is a family man and therapist who tries to maintain a normal professional and family life while harming him to young women. Unlike many series of this type, we get to know the villain in the first episodes, and therefore the suspense is not generated by the uncertainty of knowing who is the killer, but to see the detective and the killer along his days without ever knowing who will “win.”
The Crown
The monarch who has occupied the throne in England, Elizabeth II, rose to its current position after the Second World War, at a time when the monarchy had yielded much power to Parliament and the Prime Minister. Despite not having much governmental power, the queen remains one of the most influential heads of state in the world. This series of netflix navigates the story of the Queen (played by Claire Foy) from her marriage with Prince Felipe (Matt Smith) in 1947, to the present, showing the different agendas and epochs that the Queen has lived throughout her life. The Crown will surely satisfy viewers who appreciate Machiavellian stories and series like Downtown Abbey.
Homeland

It is an intellectual series that allows viewers not only to observe but also to project what is hidden.
/// COMEDY SERIES ON NETFLIX
Friends
Genre : Comedy
Years : 1994-2004
Score in IMDb : 8.9 / 10
Story: Chandler, Monica, Phoebe, Joey, Ross, and Rachel are six twentysomething friends who will make you laugh, cry and dream about their adventures and misadventures in the Manhattan of the nineties.
What the critics say: Although today is one of the most mythical comedies of American television, Friends failed to win the public favor of the critics until the second season. The rest, as they say, is history.
Master of None
We reached the second place in the best Netflix series with Master of None, a funny comedy about a 30-year-old Indian actor trying to make his way in life in New York City.
Aggretsuko (Best Animated Series on Netflix)
If you liked Office Space, but you think it would have been better if the characters were cartoons, you will be pleased to know that such a thing exists.
Aggretsuko, a Japanese caricature of the Sanrio pet company (creators of Hello Kitty), follows Retsuko, a 20-year-old panda working in a commercial company.
His career is not going anywhere, he can barely gather the energy to get up in the morning, and the boss is a pig (literally and figuratively), and those are just the problems he faces in the first episode!
Despite the cute character designs and short episodes, Aggretsuko is a surprisingly mature series.
The End of the F***ing World
Genre : Comedy, Drama, Crime
Years : 2017
Score in IMDb : 8.5 / 10
Plot: Based on the homonymous comics, the plot revolves around a young man who defines himself as a psychopath and a girl who hates everyone. Together they will venture on a road trip that will change their lives.
What the critics say: Named the best TV series this January, it has received a great acclaim. Criticism is divided between those who yearn for a second season and those who doubt that the first can be improved.
Crashing
Crashing follows a group of young friends who need accommodation in Britain. Your solution? Become guardians of the property, living in an abandoned hospital, keeping the place safe from illegal squatters in exchange for a cheap rent.
Among them are Lulu (Phoebe Waller-Bridge), his childhood friend, Anthony (Damien Molony), and Kate (Louise Ford), a tense professional and Anthony’s fiancee.
These three and other residents will do everything possible to get along and enjoy life. The first season is short (six episodes, more or less than half an hour each) and we hope there will be a second season.
Neo Yokio
Vampire Weekend vocalist, Ezra Koenig, jumped into the world of entertainment with Neo Yokio, a comedy of customs inspired by anime that shows the obsession with the image of high society New York. Set in a futuristic New York infested with demons (looking for displays of opulence), Neo Yokio follows the life of Kaz Kaan (Jaden Smith), a demon hunter who recovers from a breakup. The cast of characters includes Charles (Jude Law), Kaz’s robot butler, Arcangelo (Jason Schwartzman), his aristocratic rival, and Helena St. Tessero (Tavi Gevinson), the blogger who becomes a Marxist critic of capitalism after of a career with Chanel costumes. It’s a silly show, and it does not always work, but it has guts, and the humor is perfect.
American Vandal
The configuration of this series is ominous. A student, Dylan Maxwell (Jimmy Tatro), is accused, falsely, according to him, of an atrocious act: drawing penises with paint on all the cars of the faculty at Hanover High School.
Given his history of pranks, including drawing penises on white boards, the school expels him. Only Peter Maldonado (Tyler Alvarez), a second-year student working on the morning show at Hanover High, believes that Dylan could be innocent and sets out to prove it.
The case quickly becomes stranger than it seemed. For those who enjoy true crime stories like Making a Murderer, American Vandal is a pitch-perfect parody, emulating the lighting and structure of the story that defines the genre.
The Good Place
Eleanor Shellstrop (Kristen Bell) is on the good side of a paper chaos when, after dying, it ends at The Good Place, a serene neighborhood after life built by the cosmic architect Michael (Ted Danson).
Actually, Eleanor was a rough and unpleasant person who only took care of herself, but, now, to avoid being discovered and sent to Bad Place or Bad Place, she must learn to behave like a nice person.
The Good Place is an optimistic comedy whose unique and surprising setting, place it at a higher level than most comedies.
Lovesick
After being diagnosed with Chlamydia, the romantic Dylan (Johnny Flynn) must contact all of his former lovers of recent years and inform them about it.
In the process, you should also reflect on those relationships and get an idea of what you really want in life. The show is told in large part in the flashbacks, as each episode focuses on a woman from Dylan’s past and the story is complex.
Unlike classic sitcoms where Dylan’s misadventures would be isolated stories, events from the past inform the present. Lovesick achieves a balance between comedy and drama. Pranks or antics abound in this series, especially when Dylan’s roommate, Luke (Daniel Ings), comes onstage. Despite the comedy – or perhaps because of it – the most dramatic or somber moments hit hard. Undoubtedly, this show that understands the many facets of relationships, both platonic and sexual.
Crazy Ex-Girlfriend
The musicals are well in their correct dose. However, a certain drought of the musical genre makes the exuberant musical numbers of Crazy Ex-Girlfriend even more striking.
Story: Rebecca Bunch (Rachel Bloom) is a lawyer who abandons her career in New York and moves to West Covina, California, to reconnect with her first love, Josh (Vincent Rodriguez III). The premise seems typical, but Crazy Ex-Girlfriend rises above the absurd. The musical numbers, there are many, are fun and pay homage to several genres and classic movies.
Master of None
Created and starred by comedian Aziz Ansari, Netflix’s Master of None refers to the everyday life of Dev, a 30-year-old actor who tries to survive the rounds of adulthood while earning a living in New York.
Based a little on Ansari’s own life, the show even features the real parents of the actor as Dev’s parents. Even if you do not know Ansari’s previous work (which is also hilarious) Master of None will surely please you his witty dialogue, a multidimensional cast of characters and good arguments. In this case, it seems that Netflix has hit again.
BoJack Horseman
This series, produced by Netflix features the voices of Hollywood’s biggest stars today: Will Arnett, Alison Brie, Aaron Paul. Comedian Amy Sedaris also lends her voice to this show that shows a horse trying to remake his celebrity life. It’s a pretty ridiculous series that will make you laugh at the expense of the lifestyle of celebrities.
Archer (Animated Series on Netflix)
This is not any animated series. It is a hybrid between Arrested Development and several spy stories. The series shows the day to day of ISIS, a spy agency that deals with global crises. The majority of events that happen are opportunities to embarrass co-workers. The series is somewhat cynical, with fast dialogues and unique characters and different from any other that can be found by Netflix.
Love
The show follows Louie in his daily life. In some way, the final product is different from any other similar comedy. It’s something like Seinfeld, where there does not seem to be a script. Louis is a divorced comedian and father of two girls who is seen in stand-up scenes as he seeks to incorporate comedy into his day-to-day life. It is a masterpiece whose three seasons you can watch on Netflix.
Arrested Development
After his father was arrested for accounting fraud, Michael Bluth finds his family’s bank accounts frozen. Therefore, he is now responsible for maintaining his dysfunctional family while they deal with the matter. The program shows how the then wealthy family lives in bankruptcy. Despite having received good reviews at the beginning, the series lost its rating and was canceled in the third season. Despite this, it has an excellent cast and is a must-see comedy, especially now that Netflix revived it for a fourth season.
Portlandia
Because the program is only a few blocks away from the Digital Trends offices in Portland and makes jokes at the expense of the inhabitants of Portland, humor hurts a bit. Anyway, the series is successful, since you will laugh out loud. Fred Armisen and Carrie Browstein will walk you through your version of Portland. It has a script, but there is also improvisation.
Parks and Recreation
What appears to be a typical The Office type program, actually has an added value. It’s a hilarious study of the residents of Pawnee, Indiana. The show revolves around Leslie Knope (Amy Poehler), an employee of the Department of Parks and Recreation along with her team who work efficiently to make Pawnee a pleasant place of residence for all. The cast is composed of renowned comedians such as Nick Offerman, Aziz Ansari, and Rashida Jones.
Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt
Kimmy Schmidt, played by Ellie Kemper of Bridesmaids, is one of four women who were demoted from an underground bunker where she was imprisoned by a leader of polygamous cults. When he was free, he went to work with socialite Jane Krakowski on the streets of New York. Although the synopsis does not show any trait of comedy, it is orchestrated by Tina Fey at precise moments of the program. Watching Kemper adjust to the complexities of the modern world such as emojis and hashtags is interesting, even though he sometimes gets carried away by the post-traumatic stress of having been locked away from the earth for 15 years.
With Bob and David
Bob Odenkirk and David Cross come together again in this exclusive Netflix comedy. Like its previous HBO series, Mr. Show with Bob and David, the new series features over-the-top comedy styles, but tremendously hilarious from its creators and writers.
It is a series of fake documentaries, with each episode focused on a famous work in particular, such as The Thin Blue Line or Gray Gardens. Hader and Armisen were two of SNL’s best, and they adapt perfectly to the new roles of each episode.
What really elevates the show, besides the great moment of comedy, is its commitment to tributes. Their fake documentaries are almost perfect emulations of real things. Few shows reinvent themselves so often and effortlessly.
Comedy Bang! Bang!
For many comedians, a nightly talk show is a dream come true, but it is a dream that only a few comedians will achieve. Thus, the legend of the comedy Aukerman began his own nightly parody program, dubbed Comedy Bang! Bang! Although, while the format is the framework for the program, what makes CBB so impressive is the program’s willingness to play with different structures such as time travel, alternative dimensions and even a musical episode that parodies Andrew’s work, Lloyd Webber.

Mystery Science Theater 3000: The Return
Mystery Science Theater 3000 follows a series of hapless space workers who, along with their fellow robots, are forced to watch terrible movies as part of an experiment by some crazy scientists.
To maintain their sanity, the protagonists joke while watching the movies. Now, an exclusive on Netflix, the new season features Jonah Heston (Jonah Ray), along with robots Tom Servo (Baron Vaughn) and Crow T. Robot (Hampton Yount), watching a new crop of bad movies. Despite the new cast, the unbridled humor of the old show is still alive.
Altered Carbon
This adaptation of the popular cyberpunk novel by Richard K. Morgan, Altered Carbon is set in a few hundred years in the future, so humanity has developed the technology to download a person’s consciousness into computers.
Thus, people can be transferred to new bodies, effectively becoming immortal, provided they have the money.
And, in this world, Takeshi Kovacs (Joel Kinnaman), a former soldier who has spent the last 250 years in cold storage, returns again in another body, courtesy of Laurens Bancroft (James Purefoy), a rich man who wants Let Takeshi find the man who killed Bancroft’s previous body.
Altered Carbon resorts to classic elements of the black genre, as Takeshi explores a grimy city where everyone seems to have something hidden.
Dark
Although many comparisons were made with Stranger Things (due to the environment of the small town and the teenage protagonists), Dark is a strange story set in a town where everyone has secrets.
Dark takes place in Winden, a small tree-lined city near a nuclear reactor. Teenager Jonas (Louis Hoffman) returns to school, having spent time receiving therapy after his father’s suicide, only to find the city in a state of shock over a new tragedy: the disappearance of his fellow student, Erik Obendorf.
Erik is not the first child to disappear in Winden, nor will he be the last, and Jonas and his friends will soon find themselves on the edge of a mystery that spans generations. Dark is a creepy, dense drama, with very complex mysteries and characters.
Black Mirror
This series revolves around group of people whose personal life and behavior is altered using technology. During the last ten years, technologies have already been firmly installed in our lives. It’s easier to tell about a problem on Facebook than to trust a close person. Also in the world of “Black Mirror” people can not live without the technologies that hurt them and bring them suffering.
It is an interesting series that shows the negative consequences of the search for the perfection of the human being.
Each episode of Black Mirror tells an individual story about topics of advanced technology. It is usually compared to the Twilight Zone, and just like in the classic series, you will be stunned in front of the TV wondering what you have just seen. The aesthetic is beautiful and sublime and does not give a single clue to the viewers since it takes unexpected turns in each episode.
Star Trek: The Next Generation
For those who do not know this program, one of the most successful in the history of science fiction, we do not have much to say apart from informing that Netflix has the seven seasons of this series. Created in 1987, 21 years after the original series, the program follows the adventures of Captain Jean-Luc Picard and his crew in space. Despite Netflix’s omission in including the rest of Star Trek productions and Paramount’s decision to end the series prematurely, it has 187 episodes full of Romulans and Borg, and a world of adventures to feed its general knowledge.
Arrow
This is another show inspired by a popular comic. CW Arrow brings to life the Green Arrow of DC Comics comics. Actor Steven Arnell plays the billionaire playboy Oliver Queen who quickly took the role of Green Arrow to fight crime in the fictional city of Starling City. Netflix has two seasons of this show. The third one is being broadcast on television at the CW.
Sense8
From the mind of Andy and Ana Wachowski came Sense8, a science fiction drama about eight strangers who suddenly end up interacting, being able to transmit knowledge and skills among themselves. This series shows the incredible abilities of Wachowski and J. Michael Straczynski to tell dense stories in the science fiction genre.
/// BEST ACTION SERIES ON NETFLIX
Castlevania
The adaptations of video games have an irregular record. And, in the case of Netflix Castlevania, the idea is successful, despite its shortcomings, due to the great passion for the source material that is evident in everything.
It begins with the love story between Dracula (Graham McTavish) and a human woman, Lisa (Emily Swallow). After a corrupt bishop executes her accusing her of witchcraft, Dracula unleashes his demonic hordes, indiscriminately killing people. And it’s up to Trevor Belmont (Richard Armitage), the last drunken son of a famous vampire hunting clan, to stop the killing.
Castlevania is a violent spectacle, with scenes of wild fighting and spilled blood, but the Warren Ellis script has a lot of lightness. The first season is short, consists of only four episodes, and not all the characters have an adequate development, but it’s a pretty good start.
Luke Cage
Luke Cage has a strange way to start a series about a superhuman that fights crime. However, this series goes rather about life and politics in Harlem as much as anything else, pitting the virtues of the old school against the commercial practices of the local mob boss “Cottonmouth” Stokes (Mahershala Ali).
Rooted in black culture, it is also based largely on rap and funk music, as well as on the literary heritage of Ralph Ellison and James Baldwin.
Stranger Things
The first scene of the series shows us a scientist who runs desperately down a corridor, trying to escape an unknown force that eventually catches him while he waits for the doors of an elevator to close. The following scene shows us a group of children playing in a suburban basement in the 80s. The mysterious creature, a secret government agency, a rural town, a group of children, teenagers experimenting with alcohol, drugs and sex are the components of this program and the result is a story that we all grew up with. The performances and production are excellent.
Sherlock
Not all adaptations of Sir Arthur Conan Doyle’s novels are good. Fortunately, this show is terrifying. Benedict Cumberbatch plays the main character of the series. The charm and the basic use of his intelligence are normal but unlike other adaptations, many criminals are smarter than Doyle. Even so, Cumberbatch creates a surprisingly muscular and grumpy Sherlock and a dependent Watson (Martin Freeman).
Daredevil
Daredevil, produced by Netflix, brings the wonders of the Marvel world to the small screen in an ingenious way. Many of Marvel’s adaptations show the day-to-day character as a day lawyer and hero at night, but Drew Goddard’s version won rave reviews. Charlie Cox, who plays Daredevil, shares the set with Vincent D’Onofrio and Rosario Dawson. The expertise is glimpsed leagues in this series that has a lot of action. You do not want to miss this version.
Luther
This BBC series revolves around John Luther (Idris Elba), a brilliant but troubled English detective and their cases. It’s similar to Sherlock, but Luther’s cases are unorthodox. Elba is a somewhat raw and relentless personado and surprisingly, is often trying to establish connections between criminals and trying to do justice with their own hands. He is somewhat careless and his greatest threat comes from the bureaucracy of his own office.
Broadchurch
When an 11-year-old boy is murdered, the media covers the case in the coastal city of Broadchurch. It only has eight episodes and is an ideal program to watch on a weekend, with great twists in the story that will not let you leave the TV. David Tennant is the head of investigation of the murder and he is seen dealing with his own emotions and his decisions in the search for the person capable of committing such an act.
Penny Dreadful
This program shows two icons of the nineteenth century as Frankenstein and Dorian Gray as well as other original characters from other stories of the time. It begins by telling the story of the adventurer Sir Malcolm Murray (Timothy Dalton) and his compatriot, the psychic Vanessa Ives (Eva Green), Ethan Chandler (josh Barnett) and Frankenstein investigating the disappearance of the. Daughter of Murray, Mina. It has a gothic and lugubrious atmosphere where each one of them sails in dark places and where they must deal with their own secrets and demons.
One-Punch Man
Superheroes may seem a bit boring, right? Does anyone really doubt, when a bank robber comes face to face with Superman, that the fight is not going to win the superhero?
Well, One-Punch Man brings the unilateral nature of the superheroes to their extreme conclusion, following Saitama (Makoto Furukawa), a hero so powerful that he can defeat any enemy with a single blow.
However, being unstoppable leads Saitama to a deep sense of boredom, and must seek stronger opponents to feel alive. One-Punch Man is a hilarious parody for fans of superheroes or anime.

Wild Wild Country
The documentary series Wild Wild Country follows a fascinating but obscure episode in American history: the rise and fall of Rajneeshpuram, a religious community that emerged in remote central Oregon in the 1980s and was built around teachings of a guru called Bhagwan Shree Rajneesh. The cult tendencies of the group irritated the locals and, as the tensions increased, the Rajneeshees became more militant, tried to hijack the voting process in Antelope, Oregon, and even organized a bioterrorist attack.
Wild Wild Country makes extensive use of archival images as well as interviews with people who lived through the conflict.
The perspectives of the ancient Rajneeshees are intriguing; many remember their time in the community with affection. Rajneesh’s lieutenant, Ma Anand Sheela, is a particularly fascinating character.
Perfectly designed and very informative, Wild Wild Country is an acute exploration of how cults develop, and why they create friction with mainstream America.

Even today, popular culture still has references to Sam Malone (Ted Danson) and his iconic hair. And fortunately, Netflix has every season.
